Coping with Chronic Pain
More than 21% of adult Americans suffer from moderate or severe chronic pain, to the point that they choose to seek the help of a physician. Pain is the second most common reason that people visit doctors, exceeded only by cold and upper respiratory infections. However, The National Institute of Health claims that 40 million Americans are unable to find relief from their chronic pain.
Our knowledge of pain is far greater than that of regular physicians in St. Peterburg Florida. We are very dedicated to providing all of our local St. Petersburg Florida patients with the most effective pain management, and follow a course of conservative medical treatments before undertaking more invasive therapies. Our goal is pain alleviation—a goal often attained by our expert staff; however when it is not possible to completely get rid of pain, we can assure you that we do our best to make the pain tolerable and improve the patients’ functional status.
How is pain treatment guided?
The treatment of pain is guided by the history of the pain, its intensity, duration, aggravating and relieving conditions, and structures involved in causing the pain. In order for a structure to cause pain, it must have a nerve supply, be susceptible to injury, and stimulation of the structure should cause pain. The concept behind most interventional procedures for treating pain is that there is a specific structure in the body with nerves of sensation that is generating the pain. Pain management has a role in identifying the precise source of the problem and isolating the optimal treatment.
